Best eSIM for South Africa

South Africa has four main networks — Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom — with good 4G in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and along the Garden Route. Coverage thins in game reserves, the Karoo and rural Eastern Cape. Travel eSIMs are expensive here, so it's worth comparing.

At a glance

  • Cheapest we found: Nomad — $18 for 10 GB / 30 days on Cell C and Vodacom
  • Vodacom and MTN: Airalo — $22, the only plan we checked that can use both of the two widest networks, which makes it the best choice for road trips and safaris
  • No-account option: Talisim — $20.22 on Vodacom (4G, no 5G)
  • Best for unlimited data: Holafly South Africa — from $39.50 for 7 days, which is pricey, and hotspot is capped at about 500 MB–1 GB a day

Prices we checked

10 GB of data for 30 days, from each provider’s own website on 17 October 2026.

Provider Price Networks
Nomad $18.00 Cell C, Vodacom
Talisim $20.22 Vodacom
Airalo $22.00 Vodacom, MTN, Cell C

Holafly sells unlimited data instead: $39.50 for 7 days or $63.50 for 15 days.

Network notes

Vodacom and MTN have the widest coverage, including more of the national parks and rural roads. Telkom is fine in cities but thinner elsewhere. Cell C has no towers of its own and runs on MTN’s and Vodacom’s, so its coverage is close to theirs. 5G is available in parts of the big cities.

Airalo’s plan is the only one we checked that can use both Vodacom and MTN. Nomad’s uses Cell C and Vodacom, and Talisim’s Vodacom alone.

Practical connectivity tips

  • Install before you land. You’ll want data for Uber or Bolt at the airport.
  • Apps you’ll want online: Uber and Bolt (rides — often safer than hailing a taxi), Google Maps, SANParks (park bookings), and a load-shedding app such as EskomSePush in case power cuts return.
  • Safaris: main rest camps in Kruger have signal. Many private lodges and remote areas don’t.
  • Keep your phone out of sight in busy city areas and at traffic lights.

Watch out for

  • Power cuts. South Africa hasn’t had national load-shedding since May 2025, but local cuts still happen, and when they do, some masts lose signal after their backup batteries run down.
  • Day trips to Lesotho or Eswatini need a plan that covers those countries.
  • Remote roads in the Karoo and the Wild Coast have long stretches without signal.
