United Kingdom eSIM picks

The UK has excellent eSIM coverage across all major providers. Post-Brexit the catch is that a "Europe" regional plan may or may not include the UK — always verify before buying. Within the UK, EE has the best overall coverage and 5G footprint.

At a glance

  • Best general pick (and best for UK + Europe trips): Airalo — but confirm the UK is included on the specific Eurolink SKU you buy
  • For privacy-conscious travellers: Saily — Nord’s ad-blocker and threat protection layer on every connection
  • Best value for a one-off city break: Nomad UK 5 GB / 30 days
  • Sidesteps the post-Brexit ambiguity: Dracotel works on both sides of the Channel under one eSIM, no SKU-checking

Network notes

EE (BT-owned) has the broadest 5G coverage and rural reach. Vodafone and Three are competitive in cities. O2 lags slightly outside urban areas. Most travel eSIMs resell one of these and you’ll rarely notice the difference in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Practical connectivity tips

  • Tube and Underground: 4G/5G coverage is now live across most of the London Underground network on EE, with Vodafone, O2 and Three rolling out — but availability depends on which carrier your eSIM resells. Don’t rely on it for navigation.
  • Contactless on transport: Use Apple/Google Pay on TfL — no need to buy an Oyster card. Your eSIM doesn’t need to be the same line.
  • Apps you’ll want online: Citymapper, National Rail, Uber/Bolt, OS Maps for hiking, TfL Go for London.
  • Rural Scotland and Wales: signal drops to 3G or none in glens and national parks. Download offline maps.

Watch out for

  • EU “Eurolink”-style regional plans don’t always include the UK. Check the destination list before buying. Some include UK; some don’t.
  • Switzerland and Norway likewise: not EU, often excluded from Europe plans even though they’re geographically central.
  • UK number-based 2FA from foreign banks sometimes fails — apps with authenticator codes are more reliable.
