Best eSIM for Malaysia
Malaysia has good coverage on Maxis, CelcomDigi and U Mobile in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca and the main highways. Coverage gets patchier in Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak), in the Cameron Highlands and on the smaller islands. Pick a plan that can use more than one network if you're leaving the peninsula's cities.

Network notes
CelcomDigi (formed when Celcom and Digi merged) has the widest coverage in independent tests, and Maxis is the other big national network. U Mobile is strong in cities. 5G covers most of Kuala Lumpur and other big cities.
Talisim’s main Malaysia plans can use both Maxis and CelcomDigi, which is the best combination for travel outside the cities. Nomad’s and Airalo’s plans use Maxis alone.
Practical connectivity tips
- Install before you land. KLIA Wi-Fi works, but you’ll want data for Grab or the KLIA Ekspres.
- Apps you’ll want online: Grab (rides and food), Touch ’n Go eWallet (open to ASEAN visitors; others can buy a physical Touch ’n Go card), MyRapid PULSE (KL transport), Google Maps or Waze, and KTMB’s KITS app (KTM and ETS trains).
- Island ferries to Langkawi, the Perhentians and Tioman lose signal for part of the crossing.
- Borneo: Kota Kinabalu and Kuching are well covered. Jungle lodges and Mount Kinabalu’s upper slopes are not.
Watch out for
- Day trips to Singapore need a plan that covers Singapore too. Near the causeway your phone may connect to a Singaporean network.
- Cheap plans that route through Hong Kong can block some services, like ChatGPT. Check where a plan exits if that matters.
- Remote islands and national parks (Taman Negara, the Perhentians’ quieter beaches) have slow signal or none.
