Best eSIM for Hong Kong

Hong Kong has some of the best mobile coverage in the world: csl, SmarTone, 3 and China Mobile Hong Kong all have fast 5G, including in MTR tunnels. Google and WhatsApp work normally. The real questions are whether you're also crossing into mainland China, and whether a Hong Kong IP address will block any apps you rely on.

Network notes

csl (owned by HKT), SmarTone, 3 and China Mobile Hong Kong all cover the city thoroughly, including the MTR, the outlying islands and most hiking trails. Speeds are excellent on all four.

The Hong Kong IP catch

Some services treat Hong Kong as unsupported. ChatGPT and several other AI tools don’t work there, and some streaming apps show a different catalogue. That applies whenever your eSIM gives you a Hong Kong IP address, which most plans for Hong Kong do. It also applies to many cheap Asia plans that route through Hong Kong even when you’re in Japan or Thailand.

If you need those services, pick a plan that says it exits elsewhere.

Practical connectivity tips

  • Install before you land. The airport has free Wi-Fi, but you’ll want data for the Airport Express or a taxi.
  • Apps you’ll want online: MTR Mobile, Citymapper, Uber and HKTaxi, OpenRice (restaurants), and Google Maps. For transport, iPhone users can add an Octopus card with an overseas Visa or Mastercard through the Octopus App for Tourists. On Android, buy a physical Octopus card or tap a contactless bank card at MTR gates.
  • Hiking trails like Dragon’s Back and Lantau Peak have good signal on most of the route.

Watch out for

  • Day trips to Shenzhen or Guangzhou need a plan that covers mainland China. A Hong Kong-only plan stops working at the border.
  • Macau is separate too. Ferries take an hour, and you’ll need a plan that covers it.
  • Typhoon warnings close ferries and some transport at short notice. The Hong Kong Observatory app has the latest.
