Network notes

Telkomsel has the deepest coverage including most outer islands. Indosat and XL are competitive in Bali and Java. On Komodo, Flores and remote Sumba, expect 3G or nothing — bring offline maps.

Practical connectivity tips

• Install before landing. Denpasar airport Wi-Fi exists but is slow during peak arrival times.
• Apps you’ll want online: GoJek and Grab (essential for rides and food), Google Maps, Maps.me for offline trails, Klook for activities, WhatsApp.
• Scooter rentals are usually booked via Grab/GoJek or local WhatsApp — having data from the moment you land matters.
• Ferries to Gili Islands and Nusa Penida often have no signal for the duration. Download what you need.
• Bali coworking spaces have Wi-Fi but coffee shops vary; an eSIM with hotspot is a real productivity multiplier.

Watch out for

• Surf spots and hill villages (Sidemen, parts of Munduk) can have weak signal. Don’t rely on Maps for navigation in remote areas.
• Komodo National Park boats: often no signal for hours. Download guides and music.
• Indonesian SIM registration laws apply to physical SIMs, not eSIMs — one reason eSIMs are particularly convenient here.
