Best eSIM for Iceland

Iceland has three networks — Síminn, Nova and Sýn (formerly Vodafone) — and surprisingly good coverage along the Ring Road and in towns. The Highlands, F-roads and parts of the Westfjords have little or no signal. Iceland is in the EEA, so it's included in most Europe plans.

Network notes

Síminn is generally regarded as having the widest coverage, including more of the countryside and coastline. Nova is strong in towns and along the Ring Road. Sýn (formerly Vodafone) shares a radio network with Nova, so its coverage is similar.

Talisim’s and Airalo’s plans can use Síminn and Nova, a good combination for a Ring Road trip. Nomad’s uses Nova and Sýn. Wherever your eSIM connects, expect gaps on mountain passes, in the Highlands and on remote fjord roads.

Practical connectivity tips

  • Install before you land. Keflavík airport Wi-Fi works, but you’ll want data for the drive into Reykjavík.
  • Apps you’ll want online: SafeTravel (alerts, conditions, and sending your location to 112), 112 Iceland (contacting 112 by text), Vegagerðin / umferdin.is (road conditions), Veður (weather), Klappið (Strætó bus tickets and live times), and Google Maps.
  • Check road conditions every morning. Weather closes roads quickly, especially from October to April, and the updates are online.
  • Download offline maps before the Westfjords, the Eastfjords or any F-road.

Watch out for

  • F-roads and the Highlands have long stretches with no signal. Tell someone your route, and leave a travel plan on SafeTravel.
  • Camper vans with Wi-Fi usually use a mobile router on the same networks, so it won’t help where your phone has no signal.
  • Long summer days mean more driving and more navigation. Budget a bit more data than you’d expect for a week.
